Inspirational Monday: reading to our children...

Can you guess who this is?

I'll give you a hint. She's a main character in a classic story.

One thing I absolutely enjoyed when I was a child was having my mother, or anyone for that matter, read to me. I just could not get enough of Dr. Seuss' Horton Hatches The Egg. If I was ever given the opportunity to pick a book, you can bet that was it, especially if I was sick. I have heard it so many times that I memorised the words and to this day if someone skips a word or even try to skip a page, I will know. :)

Fortunately, my daughter has developed the same love for reading. I find it important to ensure that her library contains some books that feature main characters who have brown skin or share other cultural aspects. Believe me, there's an added dimension to a story when you can relate to the characters.

In fostering the idea that "you can be anything you want to be", it is definitely important to demonstrate with visual examples.

Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood!

*You can find out more about these books published by Disney's Hyperion at Jump at the Sun.

*Many titles are also on sale at amazon.com.

*Inspirational Monday is hosted by my dear friend vchelle at Operation You.

I absolutely loved reading Little Red Riding Hood as a child! Jannah and I read all the time. She remembers the story and "reads" it back to me. It's so much fun seeing her look at the book and tell the story! Thank you for sharing some great books!

Happy Inspirational Monday!

Oh, reading and libraries bring me so much happiness! Some of my favorite memories from my childhood, and from my children's childhoods are of visiting the library. I think you're right. It's good for kids to see characters in books that they can easily relate to.

We had a set of red books when I was a kid--my mom still has them--full of fables and stories. I had some favorites, I am sure. My mom read to me until I had the stories memorized. Even before I could read, I would recite them as if I were reading them (I don't know...maybe I was, but I don't remember it that way.) Anyhow, reading was such an organic experience for me, I don't even remember learning how.

What lovely old style illustrations, lovely. My eldest boy, 3, is just getting old enough to enjoy some books I remember reading as a child. It's such a joy to share the love of a book! i loved to read with my mother as a child, she died about 10 years ago now, but I feel very connected to her when I read with my boys. LIke she's there, turning the pages with us.

Lovely post, thank you!

do you have "oh the places you'll go" book ?

our kids each have their own and now that they are 17 and 21, they are tucked away {well, have been for years now} in their special boxes to be opened again when they have their own children....

I loved reading as a child and my boys loved having me read to them. E's favorite book was "Cookie Monster and the Cookie Tree", which had to be told in character, voices and all. Repeatedly, until my throat was sore. N's favorite book was "The Poky Little Puppy." N is still a voracious reader. E has never been. It's so important to read and I'm glad there are books out there with characters to whom your daughter can relate.

I knew it! It was Little Red Riding Hood!

I still love all those stories. I baby-sat for a friend a few years back and had such fun making up fairy tales for her little girls. Well, I was sort of taking bits from all the stories and combining them, but it was fun.

My dad would read to us every night. The fun memory we have of that is that he'd fall asleep while doing it so he'd be reading along, then doze off in the middle of a page, and we'd have to wake him up to continue .. so on.

Wonderful moments for you both!
